Having served at four different commands, (Wadsworth, Pledge, MINERON1, Gemini) I can honestly say that my time on the Wadsworth was head and shoulders the best command of them all.  Whenever I think of my years in the Navy, I always think of the Mighty Wads first and most.

Wadsworth was a great unit it was hard work from pre-com to Commissioning and then putting her on the path of her destiny in the fleet but it was worth it, and those who served with me at the time were very dedicated professionals who only new that we wanted her to be the best frigate in the fleet and she was " Ever Ready!!"

We did 3 Westpacs. The usuals, plus VaVau' Tonga, Pago Pago, Auckland and Napier New Zealand, Cairns, Mcacay, Brisbane and Sydney Austrailia, Port Moresby New Guinea, Vancouver, Panama.......... sat off Tiger Bay / Central America looking for Soviet Freighter going to Nicaragua. We escorted a French Freighter holding plutonium from Canal Zone half way across the pacific to hand off to Japanese destroyers.  We were orange force in a war game against US Air Force.  We were with the 7th Fleet in South China Sea. 2 Days in, Korean Airliner 007 was shot down by a MIG with as US conmgressman onboard over Sakhalin Island. The war game was based on blockading "Sakhalin".

The Wadsworth was a breathtaking fast frigate. It was so fast that when we did exercises we had to secure all our manuals in the Central Office Complex. Did a couple of WestPac deployments and enjoyed them despite hardships servicing almost 180 crewmembers with only 2 of us in the Personnel Office. Could not forget the fine crew especially our second XO the then LCDR Dallas Bethea that kept me on my toes all the time. He helped make the Wadworth what she was then. One of the finest vessels ever commissioned and now the Polish Navy is enjoying her.

I commissioned the Wadsworth as a GSM3 and was inspired by the great leadership that I made it my goal to become an LDO. I was inspired by CWO3 Cadorett and LT McClendon. I was commissioned in 1991. Thanks to GSCS Rick Moore and GSM2 Marty Graham, my mentors, I was very successful and owe them much gratitude for the successes I achieved in the Navy. It was a great ship and as Captain Ruff said at the commissioning, “The commissioning crew instills the spirit within the ship”. Wadsworth was a great ship. Coincidently, and honorably, my wife was Captain Ruff's nurse when he past. At his bedside was a ball cap of USS Wadsworth. He was a great leader. Thank you Captain Ruff and all crew members of USS Wadsworth.

I reported to Wadsworth in 1983 while she was in Todd Shipyard in San Pedro. She was my first ship, and I have to say the best I served on. The 1983-1984 Westpac was memorable with great port calls in Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga, to name a few! I remember all of the incidents Chevy (OS2 Chevalier) mentions! I served with a great crew! I'm now teaching elementary school in Louisiana. It's great to see this site "up and running!" Thanks for rekindling the memories!

Spent a lot of time in school before reporting to the Wadsworth. Sat in the shipyard for a long time before going on the first Wespac. Made many friends but my plan was to get my education in the Navy and get out as quick as possible. My plan worked perfectly and I have had the same job since I was honorably discharged. It is a unique job which brings challenges everyday which the Navy experience prepared me for this type of work.

I drilled on the Wadsworth while it was stationed in Long Beach before I moved to San Diego. I did a mini WestPAC with the ship, which as a 20 year old college student was AWESOME! I have stayed in the Navy Reserve, I am currently an ENS (Operations Surface) LDO attached to Special Boat Detachment 218 as the Training Officer.

Wadsworth was my first duty assignment. Completed 2 WestPacs (13 months) and became a ShellBack. Served under two Skippers CDR Ruff and CDR Hynes, as well as 2 XOs, LCDR Bethea and LCDR Nute. Became friends with a lot of great shipmates. CDR Ruff was a great skipper and LCDR Bethea was the best officer I served directly for during my 8 years. I choose to re-enlist in 1984 but it took some convincing from several shipmates. I enjoyed my tour on board Wadsworth but my last year servicing under LCDR Nute as XO and YN1 Jeffery Newbold as LPO almost convinced me to get out of the Navy. So I do want to say thank you to the shipmates that stood by me and convinced me that I had the ability to do the job. I did complete another 4 years, receiving many commendations along the way, honorably discharged and proudly still serve our veterans through AMVETS and American Legion.

I served aboard the missile frigate USS Wadsworth FFG-9 from 1984-1991 as a SELRES and spent alot of active duty time with her. I deployed to Vladivostok (CNO SpecOps) , Japan, and Korea in '89 during PACEX'89.. A great skipper (Cmdr/Capt Taylor) crew, and ship. Passed the ESWS Board and Awarded my Surface Warfare pin in 1987 by SURFRON1 Commodore with ET2 Karmann. Hated to leave "Club Wads" in Dec. 1991... I manned the rails as a former crewmember when she was decommissioned on Friday, June 28th, 2002 in San Diego. The USS Wadsworth is still sailing the high seas today with the Polish Navy, as the ORP General Tadeusz Kosciuszko 273. Fair winds and following seas FFG-9!

Was a YN2 when I reported aboard. You never forget your shipmates when you've spent underway time at sea with them - that environment makes you or breaks you, and if you pass that test, you'll never have friends like that again in your life.
