- 27 February 1976: Building contract awarded to Todd-Pacific Shipyard Corp.
- 13 July 1977: Keel laid by the Todd-Pacific Shipyard Corp, San Pedro, CA.
- 29 July 1978: Launched and christened.
- 2 April 1980: Commissioned, Long Beach, CA - CDR. John C. Ruff in command.

- 25 March 1989: Took part in the movie “The Hunt for Red October” portraying the USS Ruben James.
- 9 September - 9 November 1989: Took part in PACEX 89, The largest major naval exercise in the Pacific since the close of World War II.
- 28 June 2002: Decommissioned at San Diego, CA. - Transferred to Poland, renamed ORP General Thadeuz Kosciusko (273).
- 23 July 2002: Stricken from the NVR.
